In partnership with Festival Accès Asie and Rivières de lumières, the exhibition SOURIRE D’AFGHANISTAN is presented with the collaboration of Radio-Canada.
Within our current globalized media landscape in which most depictions of Afghanistan and indeed the Middle East as a whole are colored with tragedy, Smile of Afghanistan serves as a poignant counterpoint that turns the focus, instead, on to the #oy and hope of everyday life in Afghanistan.
Biography of the photographer :
Hamed Tabein is an Iranian street photographer based in Montreal, but whose work traverses both Canadian urban topography and the diverse landscapes of Iran, India, Syria, Lebanon, and Afghanistan. His project, Smile of Afghanistan, compiled from his travels to Afghanistan in 2013 and 2017, provides an unsentimental but profoundly empathetic look into the lives of Afghan people. In direct antithesis to the photojournalistic images showing poverty and war that so frequently flood Western screens, Tabein sought instead to capture the colour and positivity of the Afghan experience.
