Maracatu Raio de Ouro was born from the passion and unwavering motivation of a dozen musicians. Through rehearsals, performances, challenges, and moving encounters, the group has grown and expanded. Today, it has 30 members of diverse backgrounds, the majority of whom immigrated to Quebec from Brazil, and two-thirds of whom are women.
For many generations, maracatu has been sustained by the strength of community and a culture of resistance expressed through the power of percussion and song. Through its performances, Maracatu Raio de Ouro shares the intensity and beauty of maracatu, as well as the richness of other Afro-Brazilian rhythms from the Northeast, such as afoxé, samba pisado, ciranda, and coco.
