Montreal, July 2003: Seven musicians living in Montreal decided to combine their talents and found the group Anzar.
The seven musicians, from very diverse musical backgrounds, joined forces, combining their talent, experience, and energy to share the music of their origins, music straight from Algeria.
Their goal: to share their culture by introducing audiences to the rhythms that had been the soundtrack of their childhood.
The group quickly became Berbanya, from the word “anya” (rhythms) and “berb'”, short for “Berber.”
On stage, the magic happens; the melodies and rhythms of their homeland transport the audience on a distant journey, where they dance, forget everything, and simply enjoy traveling to nostalgic and captivating melodies.
September 2013 saw the release of their first album, titled “L’autre rive” (The Other Shore), the culmination of several years of work. Original compositions and lyrics addressing current issues and concerns.
March 2014: Digital release of the same album under the label of the International Festival of African Nights.
June 2023: Release of the second album, “TARA,” featuring new sounds and influences while remaining true to the group’s signature style.
Participation in several festivals across the country.
